What does Tribe teach about humility?

At Tribe, the teaching on humility starts with where it sits in relation to grace. Brian Hunter worked through James 4:6, which he attributed to James, the brother of Jesus, and the line he kept returning to was this: Brian says, "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." That verse, he said, holds two things at once. Pride is a door that stays locked. Humility is what opens it. As Brian put it, "Humility is the key that unlocks the doors of God's grace."
Brian connected humility directly to how a person receives what Jesus has already done. Every human religion, he said, involves climbing toward God on your own. Jesus says that climb is impossible and has already done something about it. The offer in Ephesians 2 is not earned and not based on what anyone has achieved, which means pride has nothing to stand on. The person who comes with humility is not bringing a credential. They are simply coming through the one door that is open to everyone.
The congregation at Tribe heard this as part of a larger message about the exclusivity and inclusivity of the gospel at the same time. The scope of the invitation is as wide as it gets, Brian said. But it requires something from the person receiving it, and that something is not an achievement. It is the posture of humility that stops insisting on a different door.
