At Tribe, the teaching on Israel's borders starts with ownership, not politics. In week seven of the Unbreakable series, Brian Hunter laid three foundation stones before touching any map. Psalm 24:1 establishes that the earth belongs to the Lord entirely. Daniel 4:35 makes clear he does what he pleases among the angels and among people, and no one can stop him or demand an explanation. And Leviticus 25:23 tells even the Israelites themselves that they are only tenant farmers, because the land is his. Brian pressed that logic outward to cover homes, talent, breath, and children. Everything belongs to God, which means the question of the land is first a question about what God has the right to do with his own property.
From that foundation, Brian walked through a sequence of maps, starting with Abraham's journey from modern-day Iraq into Canaan and the broad promise in Genesis 15:18 of land from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates. He traced the story through Israel's four hundred years in Egypt, the peoples who moved into the land during that absence, the conquest and tribal allotments under Joshua, and the note that Israel did not fully obey the command to displace those peoples, with the Philistines as one example of a group that remained and whose descendants are still present in the region. The historical sweep then continued through Roman rule in Jesus's day, the Ottoman period, the British Mandate, UN Resolution 181, the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, the Six Day War of 1967, and the subsequent accords, showing how Israel has repeatedly won territory and then conceded portions of it back in exchange for peace. Brian said plainly that borders drawn without God are lines drawn against God.
The teaching did not stay at the geopolitical level. Brian brought the whole conversation back to a personal question about the territory God has given each person in Christ, and he was direct about what stands in the way of possessing it. "That old dirty devil will try to cheat you out of land and say that that's too much to ask," Brian said. His heart for the congregation, as he stated it, was that they would own and fully possess all that God has said belongs to them.
