At Tribe, the teaching on the Jewish Messiah starts with the Old Testament prophets read on their own terms, not simply as devotional background for Christians. In the Born Champion messages, Brian Hunter walked the congregation through Isaiah 9 before naming who fulfills it, asking people to sit with what the text actually says. What emerges is a picture of conflict, darkness giving way to light, an oppressor's rod being broken, and a liberator arriving. Brian's point was that any honest reader of that passage, including Jewish readers today who are still waiting, would expect a warrior champion. That expectation, he said, is not wrong. As Brian put it, "the world today is looking for a hero, a champion, a redeemer, a liberator, a man of war, not necessarily of violence against the innocent, but violence against unjustice."
The record-scratch moment in Isaiah 9 is verse six. The champion arrives as a child. Brian opened that tension with the room rather than rushing past it, asking what a Jewish reader would make of a liberator born poor, placed in a manger, with no ceremony. His answer was that Jesus was born with the intrinsic qualities the titles in that passage describe, not merely the potential to grow into them. Brian says, "Jesus is born with the intrinsic qualities that enable him to develop these attributes."
In the final message of the Unbreakable series, Brian widened the frame considerably, working through what he called his current eschatological framework. He argued that the full biblical story of the Jewish Messiah does not end at the cross or even at a simple return. Reading the Old Testament prophets alongside the New Testament, he traced a large narrative arc: Jesus returning, a Jewish people confronted with who he is, a restored Jerusalem, and a reign that the prophets described in remarkable physical and political detail. His concern throughout both series was that followers of Jesus take the Jewish shape of that hope seriously, rather than flattening it into a vague spiritual ending.
