What does Tribe teach about letting go?

At Tribe, the teaching on letting go starts with a hard truth: you cannot hold onto your old life and receive what Jesus is offering at the same time. Brian walked through the parable of new wine and old wineskins in Luke 5 and made the point plainly. As Brian says, "You cannot add Jesus to your life because if you try to fit him and his ways and following him into just adding it into your life, it will wreck your life." Folding Jesus in around the edges of an unchanged life does not produce a fuller life. It produces, as Brian put it, someone who is a lousy sinner and a lousy Christian at the same time.
The price of a new wineskin is death. Wineskins are made from animal hide, and no animal volunteers for it. Brian used that image to name what actually has to go: old mindsets, tightly held traditions, theological assumptions that have never been examined. The rich young ruler in Mark 10 is the picture of what happens when someone feels that cost and decides it is too high. Jesus looks at him and loves him, then offers him one thing to let go of, and the man walks away sorrowful. Brian noted that the sorrow itself matters. The man felt in his spirit what he was walking away from, even as he walked away. As Brian says, "New wineskins don't come for free, it will cost you something."
The same theme runs through Brian's teaching on resurrection. Before new life can come, the old has to die. The flesh does not get born again, it has to be crucified. The spirit is renewed at salvation, but the mind has to be renewed daily. Letting go, in Tribe's teaching, is not a one-time moment of surrender so much as the ongoing shape of a life that keeps making room for what Jesus is doing.
