What does Tribe teach about miracles?

At Tribe, the teaching on miracles starts with a question Brian Hunter puts to the room: if you were handed the problem of a nation stranded in a desert with no water, what would you do? Move camp, dig a well, cause rain, fill every flask. The congregation generates a list of reasonable and even miraculous options, and the point lands when Brian notes that God had all of those available to him and chose none of them. He chose water from a rock at Horeb. The reason, as someone in the room put it, is that every other option leaves room for a human contribution somewhere. Water from a rock admits no other explanation. Brian says, "He can make water gush forth from a rock," and that undeniability was the whole point. The miracle was designed so that Israel and the nations watching could not look away and pretend it was anything other than God.
Brian also teaches that the faith behind a miracle is not always the faith of the person who receives it. Israel at that moment had almost no framework for trusting God. It was Moses who acted in obedience by striking the stone, and the people received the blessing from someone else's faith. He ties that to the paralyzed man whose friends carried him to Jesus, and to Paul's identification in 1 Corinthians 10:4 of the rock itself as Christ. Miracles, in this teaching, are not prizes for the strongest belief in the room. They come through obedience, through community, and through a God who chooses methods that make his presence unmistakable.
The stories Brian tells from his own life sit inside that same frame. The annual Tribe tradition called Pecky Day comes from a month in Tulsa when he and Lissa were $750 short with no apparent way to close the gap. Brian says what happened brought in "the reward was for 750. The exact amount that we were short that month." That kind of specificity is part of what he is after when he teaches on remembering miracles. The memory is not sentiment. It is, as he puts it, a weapon for whatever you are facing right now.
