What does Tribe teach about prayer?
Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.
At Tribe, the teaching on prayer starts with the conviction that every person who has put their faith in Jesus has direct, unobstructed access to God. Guest preacher Jason built a whole message around that idea, describing two lines available to us: one that leads to condemnation, shame, and anxiety, and one that leads to the voice of a father who says we are loved, forgiven, and free. The foundation he kept returning to is that God has wired human beings from the beginning to hear his voice, and that a conversation about us is already happening in heaven through Jesus, who always lives to intercede, and the Spirit, who intercedes with groanings too deep for words. Prayer is how we put our ear to that line.
The practical shape prayer takes at Tribe is less about technique and more about posture. Jason pointed to hurry as one of the greatest enemies of a real prayer life, quoting the words, "Hurry is the death of prayer and only impedes and spoils our work. It never advances it." Brian's teaching on walking in the Spirit pressed in the same direction: the Holy Spirit needs the word already stored inside you to work with, and the big moments of hearing God clearly are built on a long practice of listening and responding in small, ordinary ones. A shift Brian offered in one message was to move from telling God what you need him to do toward asking, "Lord, what do you want me to know about you in this situation?"
Amanda Lack's Mother's Day message from 1 Samuel 3 brought the same thread through a different door. Samuel heard God's voice three times before he understood what was happening, and Amanda drew a line between hearing and listening: as she put it, "Hearing and listening are very different. You can hear your mom call you to dinner while you're playing video games, but are you listening to her?" God, she noted, did not give Samuel the message until Samuel's posture was right, and he was patient enough to keep calling until it was. That patience, she said, is consistent with how God confirms his word throughout scripture, and it is still how he works now.
