The theological foundation Brian laid comes primarily from Romans 11 and Daniel 11. Romans 11 frames why Israel matters to Gentile believers: if Israel's rejection of the Messiah opened salvation to the rest of the world, Paul says their acceptance will be something far greater, life from the dead. Brian asked the congregation to sit with the weight of that rather than rush past it. Daniel 11 raises a harder question: when Israel faces its darkest hour, who will show up? Brian pointed to the Holocaust as a moment when the church largely failed that test, noting that Christians in Europe sang in their pews while Jews were marched past. He did not want Tribe to repeat that.
The posture Brian called the congregation toward is one of active, costly intercession rooted in God's own jealousy for his people. He drew a distinction between fallen human jealousy and what he described as God's noble jealousy, the natural consequence of total self-giving within a covenant. The prayer he held up as a model for the fast was direct and personal: "Break our hearts, Lord, for what breaks you. Wreck us for what you love and for what you care about."
