At Tribe, the teaching on renewing your mind starts with a clear distinction: when someone invites Jesus into their heart, the spirit is made new immediately, but the mind is not. Brian Hunter points to Romans 12:2 to say that the renewal of the mind is ongoing work, not a one-time event at salvation. Our neural pathways and old patterns do not get instantly rewritten the moment we are saved, which is why a person can be genuinely alive in Christ and still find themselves pulled back toward old ways of thinking.
The practical picture Brian keeps returning to is the story of Lazarus. When Jesus raised Lazarus, he came walking out of the tomb still wrapped in grave clothes, and Jesus had to tell the crowd to unwrap him. Brian says, "This world constantly tries to put those old grave clothes back on us," and those grave clothes are the thoughts that tell a person they are a failure, too far gone, or damaged goods. They only make sense on dead people, and anyone who has invited Jesus in is not dead anymore. The work of renewing the mind is the work of refusing to agree with what does not belong on a living person.
In a later message on holiness, Brian described the word of God as a seed planted during reading that God can later water and cause to surface in the middle of a workday, a class, or a parenting moment. Making room for God creates a kind of hunger, and the word is what fills it. Romans 12:2 runs through multiple messages at Tribe not as a one-liner but as the description of a real and continuing process that takes attention, deliberate choice, and a willingness to speak truth over yourself rather than agree with the voice of condemnation.
