What does Tribe teach about spiritual gifts?

At Tribe, the teaching on spiritual gifts starts with the word behind the word. Brian traced the Greek root through charis and charisma to land on a foundational point: these gifts are undeserved, given freely by God without regard to the recipient's merit. God does not reserve good gifts for good boys and girls. That is simply his nature and character expressed toward people. The gifts are also not private possessions. Drawing on 1 Corinthians 12, the teaching made clear that the gifts are given for the profit of all, meaning they find their full purpose when expressed in community. Sitting on a gift, or writing it off as something you were never given, is a way of leaving something on the table that God already set down in front of you.
The teaching on the Holy Spirit's role in all of this goes hand in hand with the gifts themselves. Brian walked the congregation through what it means for the Spirit to live in a believer, and made a distinction that matters: the Holy Spirit lives in a person the moment they are saved, fully, not in fragments. But as Brian says, "When I get saved, the Holy Spirit lives in me, but he awaits for me to give him permission to operate through me." The gifts the Spirit brings are not automatic in their expression. They require a daily choice about which nature a person lives out of, and a willingness to let the Spirit operate rather than relying on one's own strength.
Calling and gifts were treated as related but distinct. Brian was careful to separate calling, identity, gifts, vocation, and ministry, because collapsing them into one blurry idea makes it hard to hear any of them clearly. The power behind a gift or calling, one member of the congregation put it plainly, is in the obedience itself. God assigns the calling, and the strength in it comes from moving in response to something you did not choose for yourself, sharpened by his timing and rhythm rather than your own.
