What does Tribe teach about who owns the land?

At Tribe, the teaching on who owns the land starts with three foundation stones laid side by side before any historical or political question gets touched. Psalm 24:1 says the earth belongs to the Lord and everything in it. Daniel 4:35 establishes that he does what he pleases among angels and among people, and no one can stop him or demand an explanation. Leviticus 25:23 goes further and tells Israel itself that even they are only tenant farmers, because the land belongs to God. Brian Hunter draws that logic out to its full reach: if the land of Canaan is his, so is your home, your talent, your breath, and your children. Everything belongs to him.
From that foundation, Brian walked through the story of the land from Abraham's journey out of modern-day Iraq into Canaan, through the promise in Genesis 15:18 stretching from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates, through Israel's four hundred years in Egypt and the peoples who moved in during that absence, through the conquest under Joshua, and then all the way forward through Roman rule, the Ottoman period, the British Mandate, the 1947 UN resolution, the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, the Six Day War of 1967, and the Oslo Accords. He noted that Israel repeatedly won territory in wars and then gave portions back in pursuit of peace, and that Israel's failure to fully obey the command to displace the surrounding peoples left groups like the Philistines in place, whose descendants remain a source of conflict today. Throughout all of that history, the teaching holds that God is the owner and he is trustworthy with his own property, even when his decisions are not run past us first. As Brian puts it, "Borders drawn without God are lines drawn against God."
The series brought the conversation to a personal place as well. Brian said his heart is that the congregation would own and fully possess all that God has said belongs to them in Christ, and he was direct about the resistance that comes against that kind of confidence: "That old dirty devil will try to cheat you out of land and say that that's too much to ask." The physical land of Israel and the spiritual inheritance of a believer are treated as two expressions of the same truth, that God gives territory, he means for it to be possessed, and he is the one who holds the title to all of it.
