What does Tribe teach about worry?

Drawn from the messages where it was actually addressed: the words said from the front, the passages taught, and where to hear the whole thing.

At Tribe, the teaching on worry is grounded in what it means to actually relinquish control rather than simply feel less anxious. In the message on scripture memory, a congregation member named Lee brought a word connected to Philippians 4:6-7, the passage about bringing everything to God in prayer rather than carrying anxiety alone, and Brian received that as a natural starting point for the whole conversation. The underlying conviction is that worry is a posture of the heart, and that the heart is what needs to change, not just the mind.

Brian teaches that surrendering worry is one of the practical costs of following Jesus. When the congregation at the outdoor service was asked what it actually looks like to lay down your life, one of the answers offered from within the room was giving up worry as a right. That framing matters: worry is not treated as a personality trait to manage but as something a person holds onto, and discipleship involves letting it go along with other claims on the self.

The deeper teaching is that worry tends to fill the space left when something other than God sits at the center of a person's life. Brian has described what he calls a god-shaped vacuum, and says, "We've pushed God so far into the margins that we have created this god shaped vacuum in the human heart." What fills that vacuum is often the self and its anxieties about outcomes, reputation, and control. The answer Tribe points to is not a technique but a transfer of trust, the kind of braided, structural hope in God that Brian has taught from Psalm 37:34, where placing your hope in the Lord is meant to change how you actually move through life, not just how you feel about it.

The passage taught · Luke 9:18-27

18 As he was praying alone, the disciples were with him, and he asked them, “Who do the multitudes say that I am?”

19 They answered, “‘John the Baptizer,’ but others say, ‘Elijah,’ and others, that one of the old prophets is risen again.”

20 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”

21 But he warned them, and commanded them to tell this to no one,
