Pastor Brian opened with a single verse from 1 John 1 and spent the evening exploring what it means that Jesus was not only seen and heard but physically touched. The word "touch" in the Greek carried two meanings that shaped everything that followed: the worn smoothness of a worry stone handled over and over, and the plucking or bowing of a musical instrument. From that second meaning, the whole message grew.
What was said
The congregation spent a few minutes with the word "vibes" before Brian anchored it to something more precise. When John writes that the disciples saw Jesus with their own eyes and touched Him with their own hands, he is describing a real, physical, handled encounter, not a reverent museum-piece relationship. Brian argued that much of the American church has treated Jesus the way a museum treats its exhibits: priceless, rare, and roped off. That was never the point of the Incarnation.
From the Greek word for "touch," Brian introduced a chain of scientific and musical terms, not as a detour but as a lens. Frequency is how often something moves through a full cycle. Resonance is what happens when an object naturally amplifies a vibration. Sympathetic resonance is when a struck tuning fork causes an unplucked fork tuned to the same note to begin vibrating on its own. Harmonic resonance is when an object responds strongly to a frequency that matches its own natural frequency. Emily played each concept out on her cello as the definitions were built.
Those terms were then set against a short run of scripture passages. John 10:27, "My sheep listen to My voice," became a picture of harmonic resonance: the sheep are not just obeying a command but vibrating at a frequency that matches the shepherd's. Galatians 5:25, following the Spirit's leading in every part of life, was read as a description of what it looks like to stay tuned to that same frequency. Second Corinthians 3:18, being changed into His glorious image, was held up as the long process of a person's natural frequency slowly coming into alignment with Christ's, which never changes.
Brian paused on sound bowls to handle a related question directly. Sound is not the problem, he said, and Genesis 1 was cited as evidence that frequency and vibration originate with God's own creative speech. The concern with sound bowls is more specific: many carry inscriptions that are prayers to false gods, and using them opens a door that is better left shut, even if someone intends to "redeem" the practice.
The sermon came together around Luke 24:32, the disciples on the road to Emmaus asking each other, "Didn't our hearts burn within us?" Brian described those disciples as people who had spent enough time with Jesus that they had begun to resonate at His frequency. When He was crucified, that frequency went silent, and they wilted. When the risen Jesus walked alongside them, unrecognized, something in their hearts began to respond anyway. They did not want him to leave. That burning sensation, Brian said, was harmonic resonance, two tuning forks tuned to the same note, one of them having been silent for three days.
The closing movement was an invitation rather than a lecture. Brian said that anyone feeling out of sorts, static-filled, or just not quite themselves might simply be out of frequency with Jesus. The image he left the room with was the one CJ offered during discussion: a cello is hollow except for a small sound peg, and that hollowness is what gives it its resonance. The invitation was to let Jesus tune the heart back to His frequency, and the room sat with that, hands raised, while Emily played.

Things you could actually do this week.
- Spend time this week in prayer or reading Scripture and pay attention to whether your heart feels in tune or out of sorts, using that as a signal of where you are in frequency with Jesus.
- If something or someone has been creating dissonance in your life, bring it honestly to Jesus and ask Him to tune your heart back to His frequency.
- If you own or have been using a sound bowl, look into what is inscribed on it and consider what you were actually inviting when you used it.

- This week, when you notice you are feeling off or out of sorts, instead of just pushing through, stop and ask whether you have drifted out of harmony with Jesus and do whatever it takes to get back in step with Him.

So, in first John, we're gonna turn to chapter one and we're gonna look at verse one and we'll put it up here on the screen. First John chapter one verse one. That's where we're going this evening. If you have an electronic Bible, you can read along. If you have your acoustic Bible, you've probably have found first John by now and we'll even put it up here on the screen.
This is from the NLT and it says this, we proclaim to you, we, as in the author of first John, which is the apostle John, the one whom Jesus loved. And he says this, we proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom you have seen and heard. We saw him with our own eyes. Everybody say eyes. Eyes.
And we touched him with our own hands. Everybody say hands. Hands. And then he just says this, to leave no room for debate or or doubt or confusion. He is the word of life.
If you're taking notes this evening, you can write at the top of your notes the title of the conversation that we're going to have. The title of our conversation this evening is called simply Jesus Vibes. Jesus Vibes and I have a feeling that if this message not only will it personally impact and the Holy Spirit will have something for you out of this, but I think this could be one of these messages that you'll want to dog ear and send out to other people that the Lord may lay on your heart that should hear or connect with this message. So, Jesus vibes. So, that word vibes.
Well, what is that word even mean? Like, have you ever been to a social situation when you're like, you know what? We'll just we'll we'll duck in real quick. We'll check the vibe and then we'll see if we wanna stay and then maybe we're out or how many of have either said this or heard somebody else say this? Hey, sending good vibes.
How many of you have ever heard that? So, when somebody says one of those iterations of that phrase, what do they mean? Shay, do you have the mic? Let's run the mic around in the room so that people who are watching the live stream or tune back in to watch the live stream, they'll be able to hear your contribution to the conversation this evening but what is that phrase mean? Sending good vibes or let's just check the vibe.
What is, what does that mean? Nancy's going to kick us off. Always. I would have thought we would hear from somebody 25 or under. Know, right?

I mean, like, the the whole new age spirituality side of things brings into concept, like, the concept of vibrations that all all of it is energy. All of it's energy. And so vibrations, like, bring something good to the room. So it could be part of atmosphere, but it's like, I'm sending good energy. I'm bringing vibrations to you good vibes, Not the bad vibes.

I mean, I must be the same age as Phil because that's exactly what I was going to say. Energy. I mean, there's all kinds of different energy, positive, negative.

So, look at this. Vibe check. So, look at this. Out of all of the amazing things that we could camp out on in this one single verse, we're gonna confine it to this this sentence. We saw him with our own eyes and we touched him with our own hands.
When you look at that word touch in the Greek, it means exactly what you think it means to to handle, to to touch. I think many people in the church in America and around the world have made, have honored Jesus to the extent that he has become something so reverent that he cannot be touched or handled. Like a museum. Think of an exhibit in a museum. How many priceless, rare, one of a kind objects are in a museum?
A lot. That's why they're in a museum. But the number one rule in a museum is do not Touch. Touch. That's why I like going to a children's museum.
Because the exhibits in a children's museum are kinetic. They are meant to be experimented with. They are meant to be examined. They are meant to be picked up even if they have like the little steel cord so you can't run off with it. They are meant to be to be have a tactile experience with and that is why God made his word incarnate and dwelt among us.
So that not only would we hear his words and have them written down but if he did, that would be enough. But he moved into the neighborhood. If you read the God, the I believe it's the gospel of John from the message translation. It says, in the beginning was the word. The word became flesh and dwelt among us.
We beheld him as we beheld the only the glory of only begotten son. That's not the message. That's just how it entered into my brain. But in the message, a few verses later, it says, and the word moved into the neighborhood. Jesus is Jesus came in the form of a person with an earth suit just like you and I have.
The purpose of that was so that we could not only see him with our eyes and hear him with our ears. But Lizzie, come here. But so that we could also touch him with our hands and and feel him and the gospel of John. Described Jesus says the God in the gospel of John. They're reclining all around the table and John is really humble.
He doesn't like to say and I had my head on his shoulder. He said, the disciple whom Jesus loved reclined with his head on his breast and can you imagine how much closer does John who's also writing this, get to be with Jesus that he could touch and see and handle and you are the most appropriate person to do that with because Selah and Kai aren't here. But there is more to this word touch. If you examine that word in the Greek, one of the really cool things about that word in the Greek is when you saw that word either spoken or written or spoken or you spoke it, there were two ideas and concepts that came to your mind. The first one was like that of a touchstone.
How many of you have ever heard of a worry, a a worry stone? Boomers, this is your chance. How many of you have ever heard of a worry stone? Well, good for you. Good for you but I'm asking if you've heard of it.
You know what a worry stone is? Alright, Gen Z, millennials, a fidget spinner. Okay? Same thing. A worry stone or a touchstone is an ancient ancient fidget spinner.
People would have them in their pocket or in their little leather pouch with a drawstring and it was a stone that was rubbed over and over. Maybe maybe you called it like a good luck stone or something that we don't believe in but it was a stone that you would rub and rub and touch and touch and touch and it was smooth to the touch from repetitive use. How many of you are with me at least in concept? Yes. Okay.
Alright. Good. Good. Good. But here's the other part of the definition of the word to touch, not just to have tactile contact with, but it's this, to rub or to pluck the string of a musical instrument.
That is the specific associated definition with that word to touch. This that that was your best opportunity to go, yes. Now, to illustrate this point further because we're going to continue to unpack this I just wish that I had some type of an object lesson or somebody that could help me illustrate this point. Here, let me scoot over. I want you right here so that we can see you. So, this is Emily. Everybody say hi, Emily. Hi, Emily.
So, let me let me ask you really quickly. This idea of we saw Jesus with our own eyes. We heard him and we could touch him. Not only does it mean to rub but it also means to to rub or to pluck in terms of a musical instrument. Now, can anything be a musical instrument?
Kind of. Ask Leona. She would probably say, yes. Anything can be a musical instrument. Now you're gonna get varying results on what it is that you you rub or that you pluck.
So, for example, what if you were to pluck this leg of a stool? A A dull metallic dud. Now, you have a bow for your instrument. Correct? Yes.
What if you were to rub your bow across this? Would we get any different results? Yeah. Yeah. You can sticky up the stool.
The universe is full of motion and vibration. The amount I I wanna define a couple of things before we go any further here so that we can all be on the same page with the beauty of what John is saying in this gospel in relation to how we are intended to interact with Jesus. Let's talk about frequency, okay? Frequency is the amount of times a thing moves from a starting point and back to that point within a given time period. That's called frequency.
Anybody in PE class ever have to run the pacer? Mhmm. Some people loved it. I I did. I love the pacer test because I wanted to see like how fast because then you just get dropped off the back if you couldn't keep up.
So the word frequency, in scientific terms, when you're talking about frequency, frequency can be measured in hertz in scientific terms, h e r t z, not h u r t s. But if you were to talk about frequency in terms of musical terms, what would that be called? Don't overthink it. A a note. A note.
Okay. Let's keep going. Let's keep going. How about this word? Resonance.
Resonance. Resonance is a natural amplifier of vibration or frequency. So if something has resonance, it is a natural amplifier of frequency or vibration. Resonance. Yes.
For example, I don't know if you've ever experienced this, but maybe if you've been on a walk down at South Park and you go past like the the the Big Elk Corral, there is like a little there is a bridge that goes over a span of marshy area and the cattails grow up in between that little metal grate. How many of have been there? And if you've ever run across that or walked across that, if you get your steps just right, what happens to that bridge? It begins to like, have you ever walked across like like a rope bridge or like at the playground, one of those little wooden slat bridges and you either get out there and you make it go that you're creating resonance as you walk across that it it may not it may not do anything but if you get your steps just right in the span of the bridge is long enough and you get and if you have more people doing it just in step, you'll get the the bridge to just really get some motion in the bridge. Resonance.
If you may not be able to relate to that example, how about this example? Have you ever been a passenger princess in a car and the driver of the car rolls down only one window? What happens?
Woah. Woah. Woah. Woah.
Is that pleasant or is that not pleasant? Not pleasant. What do you need them to do? Open up the other window. Even just crack a little bit.
What's happening when you get that boom, boom, boom, boom, boom? That's called resonance. The air moving across the open window creates a certain very low end frequency that you may not be able to hear so much as you feel and it feels uncomfortable in your eardrums. Resonance. How about the body of a guitar?
It has resonance and the sound comes out through there's a very technical term for this part of the guitar. What is do you know what this is called? The sound hole. Sound hole that allows the resonance created by the body of the guitar to escape the guitar making its way into your eardrums. In a similar way, look at the shape of this musical instrument.
It has resonance. Now, we we're still we're still learning about some important words, sympathetic resonance. Sympathetic resonance. I look for these and I couldn't grab a hold of them but let's say we had three tuning forks. Okay.
You know what tuning forks is and you're banging on something and and they are usually in a a musical note, a, c, g. Is that a note? Or g. Sympathetic resonance. If I have two tuning forks that are both tuned to the musical note g, if I bang one and you hear it, you'll hear the note g loud and clear and beautiful.
But sympathetic resonance means if I have another tuning fork G, this one I struck and I bring it near this tuning fork that has not been struck, what will this fork start to do? Resonate. Sympathetic resonance. When vibration in one object causes another object with a matching natural frequency to vibrate. K.
Last word and then we're done with science class where we're gonna begin to put it all together. What about this what about this word? Harmonic resonance. Don't put it up. If we know what sympathetic resonance is, let me just ask you, what do you think harmonic resonance is?
Resonance, sympathetic resonance, harmonic resonance. I didn't know either. I didn't know either until I went on this journey. Harmonic resonance. When an object responds strongly to a vibration that matches its natural frequency.

Give yourself a hand for those of you who are so musically inclined. I have no idea how bad of a singer I am. That's how bad of a singer I I actually am. But I have other gifts and talents. My wife and Jesus love me.
Harmonic resonance. When an object responds strongly to a vibration that matches its natural frequency. Can you think of anything in life or that maybe you've seen or encountered that has harmonic resonance? Phil, you can just say it. What do you think?
So, a room responding to a frequency. Venetia and then Janet. Bees. Bees.
So, they work together and whenever there's someone inside the hive that's dangerous, one bee will go onto it and actually start vibrating really hard and it singles to all the other bees for them to match the same frequency to kill it.

I was thinking of the elk harmonics during mating season.
Oh, like an elk bugle.
Yeah. That's that's a harmonic.
And timely. Yes. Okay. How about how about something something with harmonic resonance? I only thought of one example and all of those are much better than the example that I thought of.
Something with harmonic resonance that you may see like here around Jackson. Fair, maybe not common but more common in Jackson than surrounding area. Another hint. Oh. I don't have it,
but I've thought of another one.
Okay. Okay. Okay. Love. Love?
When an object responds strongly to a vibration that matches its natural frequency, everybody say, oh. Two people. Two people? Yes. Okay.
Good. You have to wait for February 14 for for that one. Harmonic resonance, think new age movement. Sound balls. Sound bowls.
So maybe you're very familiar with them, maybe you're completely unfamiliar with them, but I I I wanna at least touch on sound bowls. Sound bowls are are a device used often in the new age movement to help facilitate meditation and they're like usually a brown either glass or bronze bowl and it has a little wooden thing that you can rub around it or you can strike it and it will make a clear sounding tone that has harmonic resonance. The shape of it, the thickness of it works as an a a response strongly to match its natural frequency. Let's talk about sound bowls really quickly. Ill advised for the Christian.
Not good for the Christian. Well, why? It makes sound. Is it possible to redeem and reappropriate a sound bowl? Sure.
Maybe. But my question would be, if you want a sound bowl that bad that you would be willing to like, I redeem this and I would be like, like, what's like, what are you trying to do? What are you trying to do? Many, I've looked up a lot of pictures. Many sound bowls also have inscriptions on them not in English.
You should definitely find out what language is that because many of them either in Sanskrit or ancient Buddha writing or in other eastern religions actually have prayers to false gods on those sound bowls and the intended purpose is as you use them, you are sending out prayers to false gods. It's is sound good in of itself? Yes, Genesis one one. In the beginning, the earth was formless without void and in the first day of creation, God said, he spoke words, frequency, vibration. They are from God but using a sound bowl is like having a picnic outdoors that draws flies.
Picnics are good. You can have a Jesus picnic but picnics outside draw flies and in a similar way, when you engage in and use a sound bowl, you could be giving a clearer call the invitation of a funky monkey that would love to come running to be a part of whatever it is that you think you're doing even if you've redeemed it. Have I beaten this horse insufficiently?
I was just gonna say on that note, I didn't know what a sound ball was.
On that note.
That note. And I went to this event through my work and it was a relaxation event. I didn't know this was gonna be there. We're all like laying there trying to relax and then all of a sudden somebody starts using one of those. And it made me physically sick.
As soon as they started doing it, I felt physically sick. I had to leave because something about the frequency just it gives me chills thinking about it actually.
Bad vibes. That is so awesome that you would be that sensitive and that in tune to it. I'm sure that there is a I'm sure that there is a word dissonance. Is that a good word? Where you have one vibration and you you can cancel out that vibration with something else?
That's essentially how noise cancelling headphones work. Noise cancelling headphones are not the same as sound bowls. Use them on your next flight. Okay? Okay?
But there was dissonance in your spirit because you're vibrating at one frequency, Jesus vibes, and here comes something. You're like, mm-mm. Ain't doing that. Four forty four hertz. Four okay.
I know. Well, I wasn't gonna get into specific force. Please see Jacob after service, and he will regale you with the beauty and the truth of 444 hertz. Okay. Let's go back to God's word.
Now that we are we are thinking about frequencies and harmonics. Let's go back to God's word and I want you to look at these verses perhaps with fresh eyes that you have never seen the beauty in this idea related to sound and vibrations. John chapter 10 verse 27. My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me.
John chapter 10 verse 27. Can you see the idea and the concept of harmonics and vibration in this verse? You've probably never thought of it in terms of vibration. My sheep, listen. How do you listen?
With your ears. Your ears pick up sound vibration. Listen to my voice. The object in this instant, it's a person, the one and only son of God, who is creating those vibrations and I know them and they follow me not only in terms of leadership or direction or thought though none go with me, still I will follow but more than that, they vibrate just like me. Can you play maybe it's called a chord.
Notes that is it two or more or three notes make a chord? Three notes that make a chord. So, they vibrate together. So give us one note and then would you give us a chord? One more time.
John ten twenty seven. They vibrate just like me. Can you play two or three notes that don't go together? For musicians, that can be really hard. Actually, I do.
If you can hear the difference. Want another verse? Galatians chapter five verse 25. Since we are living by the spirit, let us follow the spirit leading in every part of our lives. For the Christian.
You have been reborn. You've been tuned to resonate with the Holy Spirit. One note and then that chord again is just so beautiful. Listen, we were designed to resonate in harmony with our creator, Jesus. Remember when when I asked Emily to pluck this, see if anything's changed?
No. What do you call it? Draw your bow across. Has and now play the one chord? Is the instrument that is is the device that she's using to play this and play this, did it change?
Phil just nods. He's getting it. One more verse. Second Corinthians chapter three verse 18. All of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord and the Lord who is the spirit makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image with this verse up here on the screen considering what we've been talking about frequencies and resonance, harmonic resonance that acts as an amplifier.

On the last line, we are changed into his glorious image. My first thought is what Caleb said about love and our love with the father. I thought of the one joke, are they dating or siblings? Because you start to look alike almost. The longer you're together with someone and the longer we're with the Lord, we start to continue to look more like him through our love.

Long way to go. You do. We gotta grow. Get that pretty. Yes.
Yes. The more time you spend in harmony with one another, the more you resonate like one another. The Bible talks about us being transformed into his image. So if he's vibrating, if Jesus is vibrating at a certain frequency and we're vibrating at not quite the same frequency but the goal is for us to vibrate at the same frequency. Who going to change?
Jesus or us? Us. Us. We gotta change. He doesn't change.

This hasn't formed totally in my head, but have you ever heard of a tuning fork being the poor man's x-ray? So if you vibrate a tuning fork, Carice fractured her arm this year, so that's why I'm thinking of it. So if she were to get injured and we didn't want to have her have an x-ray or we didn't want to pay for an x-ray, we could find out, is it actually fractured Tuning fork, you put it on there and if it hurts real bad, it hurts real bad because there's a fracture but normal on a on a heel, on a normal bone, the tuning fork doesn't hurt. So, there's something about that picture with when you use a tuning fork, you're getting lined up with the Lord. So, when you have fractured places, it's like, he's revealing that so he can heal it.
It makes so much sense. You send a vibration through that bone, that bone will resonate, but if there's a little fracture, your nerves are like, don't do that. Amazing.
Scott Harman, a resident PT that some of you may be familiar with, I'm sitting with my foot in a bucket of water and ice, and I say to him, is it fractured? And he says, well, there are two ways to find out. One is we can get it x rayed. The other is I can stick this thing in there and see how high you jump. The thing being something's vibrating.

Cha, cha, cha. One of the important things about a cello and about a guitar as well is that they are both hollow. Like there's a sound peg in here. But that's it. Rest is air.
And I think in a similar way we are meant to hollow ourselves and have that replaced with the Holy Spirit.
How about can you can you bear just one more passage? Let's go. Luke chapter 24 verse 32. They said to each other, didn't our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the scriptures to us in that passage. Can you not see clearly?
Abundantly jumping off the page? This idea of harmonics and resonance? The disciples who were traveling on the way to Jericho who had been around Jesus because they were disciples. So, they had spent some amount of time vibrating at the Jesus frequency. Then, he was crucified.
He was laid in a tomb and they were like, well, that's it. The music has stopped. What if you were to play a chord and then stop it abruptly? That sound like a computer.
Jesus
saves. And they were dejected. And they're walking down the road and then here comes this mysterious figure and they're like and he says, what are you talking about? And they're like, dude, where have you been? All of Jerusalem is talking about this man, Jesus.
And then Jesus goes, Jesus? Jesus who? He's playing them. He's he's looking for something in there. And then they tell all about him, and he's like, oh, wow.
Interesting. Then he begins a conversation with him. Jesus does Jesus' frequency change? Nope. He's always vibrating at the frequency of the only begotten son of God, the king of kings, lord of lords, the prince of peace, the healer, the conqueror, the liberator, the redeemer.
That's the frequency that he vibrates at and he don't ever change his frequency. We have an opportunity to change our frequency. Those disciples who are walking along the road that had spent some amount of time with Jesus had begun to vibrate at that frequency. The frequency drops out and they're like, and they kinda wilt until Jesus meets them on the road. And they're like, something is going on.
Like, he's like, well, I'll see you guys. Looks like you're at your stop for the night. And the disciples say, no. No. No.
No. No. No. Please come on. Stay with us.
Stay with us. Just come inside. Like, hang out because something was happening in their hearts. He's like, okay. I'll stay.
Did he always intend to stay? Yes, of course. Then, he shares communion with them and they go and then he's like, mission accomplished and he's out. And the only way that they could describe that feeling of harmonic resonance was, didn't our hearts burn within us? Did you feel a connection?
If maybe not to the Lord at least to the Holy Spirit when she played that beautiful chord. You did because I heard you exclaim verbally and to remind you again what that chord was. Would you just play softly for a little bit? Here's the bottom line. Listen.
When we tune our hearts to Jesus, our whole being begins to resonate with his life. Let me say it one more time. When we tune our hearts to Jesus, our whole being begins to resonate with his life. Have you felt recently like you're just out of sorts? Have you felt recently like just I don't know.
Like, I just feel this is some some static. Just not quick feeling myself. I'm not feeling in the groove. Or maybe your friends have been like, what kind of vibes are you putting off right now? Maybe there's some dissonance in your life.
I would tell you, guaranteed, you just might be out of frequency with Jesus. The invitation this evening is to come into alignment with his frequency. We all need tuning because we're somewhere in between a stool and the cello. Let Jesus tune your heart to his frequency this evening. Then, beautiful music happens if the guitar were to be introduced into this.
They did not practice. I'm totally throwing this at them. But why don't we take the few moments that we have left? Why don't we take some time and consider the frequency of our heart and our life this evening. Maybe somebody has really ruffled your feathers.
Maybe it's a situation at work. Maybe just when you thought your car was running good and then the transmission goes out. Like the text I got from my son, Kai tonight and maybe somebody else. The Jesus frequency doesn't change. To of be name be of the Holy Spirit to preach his beautiful, eloquent, powerful sermon to our hearts.
Come Holy Spirit, speak to us. Where it's more subtle or subdued, unmute, and with a guitar with your fingers over the muted and now unmuted. I feel like the Holy Spirit would say, you're trying your best to be in frequency, in harmony with Jesus, but maybe there's just something that is muting the strings of your heart. You're playing all the right notes, but there's just still something that's blocking or preventing the vibrancy of the music of your life to reflect being in harmony with Jesus. Boy, if we weren't in church be in to in church.
To able music of their heart from ringing out. We're Would you just be raise your hand? And just hold it there. And I'm going to pray for you, but I would like to invite you to raise your other hand like a tuning fork and just and the rest of us are going to join you with our hands lifted. Either palms up or you can go full charismatic all the way over your head.
Tune our hearts to you, Jesus. Tune our hearts to you. Let the Holy Spirit just hover over you for a moment more. We're almost done. Thank you.
