This Mother's Day message was preached by Pastor Brian at the Virginian Hotel, where Tribe met for the first time as a test drive for a potential new space. He used the occasion to define what God says about women and biological sex before honoring mothers and women in the way he felt Scripture called for. The message moved from Genesis through Romans and into the Gospels, ending with a personal reflection on what it means to protect and celebrate the women God has designed.
What was said
Pastor Brian opened by acknowledging the unusual setting, a bar on a Sunday morning, and said it didn't bother him at all because the church is a community of people, not a building. He noted the Virginian was being evaluated as a potential home for Tribe, with five criteria needing to line up: the right location in Jackson Hole, adequate adult space, adequate children's space, parking, and the right price.
Before getting to the celebration of Mother's Day, Pastor Brian said he felt it was necessary to slow down and define terms, not according to popular opinion but according to the God who created what we are defining. He read from Genesis chapter one, where God creates human beings male and female, and said that passage establishes two biological sexes as God's design.
He then turned to a verse in Proverbs about not moving ancient boundary stones, the markers that in ancient Israel defined each family's allotted land. He used that image to name what he sees happening in the current cultural moment: boundary stones established by God, not by any county survey or culture, are being moved. He said he was not making a political statement or targeting any individual or group, but was addressing an ideology he believes Scripture speaks to directly.
He read Romans chapter one, verses 18 through 32, and said Paul addressed two thousand years ago the same dynamic Tribe faces today. When a society suppresses the truth about God and turns to worship what is created rather than the creator, he said the text shows that God gives that society over to increasingly dark, confused, and foolish thinking. He applied that to the current cultural difficulty in even stating a common-sense definition of a woman.
Pastor Brian said that as a biological man, a husband, and a father, something rises up in him when he sees those boundary stones moved, not because his daughter is helpless, but because Scripture places on men a specific responsibility to affirm what God has set, so that women can flourish to their fullest potential. He was careful to say his daughter is fierce and tenacious, and that women carry a strength men would buckle under. The responsibility he described is not about women needing men to be complete, but about men being accountable to uphold what God established.
He then pointed to Jesus in Matthew chapter 19, where Jesus himself affirms that from the beginning God made them male and female, and in John chapter 14, where Jesus says he is the truth. He noted that Jesus gave what he called a reverse altar call, loving people enough to speak hard things and then respecting their choice to walk away. He also noted how Jesus treated women in first-century Judea, a culture where a woman's testimony was not even admissible in court, by respecting them, listening to them, trusting them, and healing them.
Pastor Brian closed the loop by answering the question he opened with. We celebrate women and mothers, he said, because we honor God when we recognize his sovereign design. He invited anyone who felt angry or unsettled by the message to bring that directly to God, citing Zephaniah 3:11 and the promise that God will quiet them with his love.
