Whoo. Okay. Alright. I like to hear it. Next week, we well, this week, I hope I hope to land the plane on the series of new wine that we've been talking about, unless the holy spirit seems to think that you are thick headed and hard hearted and need to hear more of this again next week.

That's really up to him, but I hope to land the plane this week. And also next week, we're going to you'll hear a little bit more about this during offering announcements, but next week, we're gonna celebrate pecky day. And how many of you have never ever ever heard of pecky

Yo. Great. You're in for a treat. Okay. That's it's really exciting.

So next week, we're gonna we're gonna celebrate pecky day here at Tribe. You'll hear a little more about it, offering announcements, and then next week, we'll explain even more about it. And so if you have your bible with you this morning, would you please once again turn to Matthew chapter nine? And we're gonna continue on in our series of conversations about new wine and wine skin, and we're going to review just really quickly after we read, and then we'll get into today's conversation. And so Matthew chapter nine, we're gonna read the same words of Jesus from two different biographers.

The first one will be Matthew. The second one will be Luke. And so whoever is turned to Matthew chapter nine, would you please read verses 14 through 17? You can read it out loud for us.

Then the disciples of John came to him saying, why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast? And Jesus said to them, can the friends of the bridegroom born as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. No one puts a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch pulls away from the garment and the tears may worse. Nor is it put new wine into old wineskins or else the wineskins break, the wine is filled, and the wineskins are ruined.

But they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.

K. And then how about somebody else read Luke five thirty three through 39 for us?

Yes, miss. One day, some people said to Jesus, John the Baptist's disciples fast and pray regularly, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees. Why are your disciples always eating and drinking? Jesus responded, do wedding guests fast while celebrating with the groom? Of course not.

But someday, the groom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast. Then Jesus gave them this illustration. No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and uses it to patch an old garment. For then, the new garment would be ruined and the new patch wouldn't even match the old garment. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins for the new wine would burst the wineskins, spilling the wine and ruining the skins.

New wine must be stored in new wineskins. But no one who drinks the old wine seems to want the new wineskin. The old wineskin's just fine, they say. Just fine. Just fine, they say.

Let me let I I think everything's fine. I think everything's fine, but I need to take just a I need to take just a moment here. Jesus, we love you. As we have prayed and sung, you are the esteemed guest of honor in this service in our hearts. We ask that you would direct our words and our conversation.

We proclaim your spirit to be the predominant influence of our time together here this morning. Come, holy spirit. Illuminate the scriptures. Anoint our conversation. Rush in over the threshold of our hearts this morning.

So that when we leave here, we would say one to another, surely the Lord was in this place. As one of my mentors used to pray, Lord, we laud and magnify your name. Meaning, we make a big deal about it because you're worthy. Amen. On your Myspace page. But I'm going to I'm going to really quickly I'm gonna really quickly rip through where we've been. And if you're like, wait. You're moving too fast. You can go back and watch it and or scratch out some notes really quickly and or I see a lot of people just pulling out their phones.

They take a picture of it, and then and then we keep going so that we can get into the the conversation that we're gonna have. And you can write at the top of your notes the title of the conversation that we're going to have this morning. The title of this morning's conversation is a warning about new wine. A warning about new wine. Okay.

So here's where we've been. We've talked we've tried to define terms, and we've talked about what does the new wine represent. So when we read those two parable or those two stories from Jesus, we read through it and we think, oh, yeah. And we're looking for, like, some some really weird cryptic meaning, or I don't know what you're reading what you're looking for when you read. But sometimes we miss the basics.

And so when we go back and just define simple terms, it helps us to unlock the depth of what Jesus is talking about. And so we first started by asking this question, what does the new wine represent? And then he was writing he was speaking to a certain group of people, but the words were written down for us. So specifically, when Jesus was talking about the new wine, he meant this. Jesus came to fulfill the law and establish a new covenant, a new way of having right relationship with God.

And we see that anytime he interacts with the pharisees, they were having such trouble trying to take the new wine of Jesus' words and put it into their old wineskin. They just would just twist their religious panties into a bunch. Generally speaking, what does the new wine represent? Generally speaking the new wine represents any new way that god is moving a new revelation that he's releasing new facets of his character of his expression etcetera. Now for let me explain what I mean by a new revelation he is releasing.

Alright? We do not believe that God would say anything out of character from what he has already said in the bible. Mhmm. Okay? That's that's important.

And most of you who know me know, like, yes, I know what you mean, Brian. But it's it's it's valuable for me to say that just in case somebody doesn't in case somebody tries to hear what I'm not saying. Right? I am not saying that God is releasing new revelation from heaven that only I know about that transcends or supersedes the bible. That's not what I'm saying.

But you you know that because you know me. A new revelation would be have you ever been reading the bible and you read something and a verse stands out to you, it just leaps off the page or it comes alive for you? You're like, what? And you're like, did that just get put in there? Well, no.

Sure enough. His words have always been in there. When his word comes alive, that's what I'm talking about. Do you have a wineskin that can contain that? So that's what the new wine represents.

What does the wineskin represent? The wineskin represents a person's capacity to receive and adapt to a new work of the holy spirit in their life. And then well, last week, we took a little bit of a departure for to talk about we talked about a dream that I had recently. But the week before that, we talked about how does a person acquire or grab a hold of a new wineskin. And here's what we said.

Wineskins don't come for free. They will cost you something. And this is really important. New wineskins don't come for free. It will cost you something.

And then we said this, a new wineskin is purchased by saying do I have this? A a new wineskin is okay. Listen. Listen to my mouth words. A new wineskin is purchased by saying, Lord, I surrender to your leadership.

I haven't always thought like this, but I accept your invitation to the new thing that you're doing. I love you and I trust you. The keyword to purchasing a new wineskin is surrender. Death has to be involved. Death to your old mindset.

Death to your old way of thinking. Death to the pattern that you've been stuck in for a long, long time. It has to die. Wouldn't it just be great if we could, like, go to a prophet or go to our pastor and be like, well, hey, I've got this issue. Can you just, like, cast out my flesh?

I bind you spirit of sleeping in. Oh, I'm set free. And now you're up at, like, you know, whatever time you need to get up to, like, have a good, robust, quiet time. I cast out the spirit of laziness. Like, wouldn't that just be great?

But you cannot exercise the flesh. Meaning like cast it out. There's only one thing that can be done with the flesh. And what is that? Death.

Death. It has to be what? Crucified. Crucified. This is what we this is what I mean by when we talk about many times bossing yourself around.

Paul says in first Corinthians, I beat my body and make it my slave. You have to boss yourself around. There are things that need to be put to death. It can't be gussied up. It can't be camouflaged.

It can't be just put on the back burner because it always if it's if it's not crucified, it will always come back and come back up to the surface, which really sometimes is the holy spirit's doing to give you an opportunity to crucify that thing. And once it's crucified, surrendered to the lord. Because I know what you're thinking. Well, I've tried that and it, like, comes back up. It's just a ghost from the graveyard, and it has no capacity to influence your life other than that which you give it.

If you say, you're dead. What? I'm not even messing with you. How is the new wine skin purchased? Through death.

Only through death. Death to old mindsets. Mhmm. Death to old patterns. Death to preconceived notions.

Death to fear. Death to any thought that is contrary to what is clearly laid out in scripture. Paul says in first Corinthians, I love in the message translation, he says, we use our powerful god tools for tearing down barriers directed against the knowledge of Christ, and we bring every loose thought, emotion, and impulse into a life structured by Jesus. So when you do that, that's what creates room in your heart for a new wineskin to hold the new wine of what he has for you. New wineskins don't come for free.

It will cost you. So now with that in mind, we're gonna talk about a a pretty severe warning that Jesus has for us about New One. And this is illustrated beautifully in John chapter eight. So let's turn to John chapter eight. While you're turning to John chapter eight, any thoughts, questions, or illuminations from maybe that you've been getting from the last couple of weeks on your own study diving into this?

John, yes?

Are we not using the mic today?

We can pick up your volume just fine in our cozy little nest here.

So the death part sometimes can be something we decide. And a lot of times, I think a lot of people come into Christ. It's something that you you fall into or happens to you and you get devastated. But I have a small example of death in that I was winter camping decades ago and got really cold and actually froze my feet pretty seriously. And and so I had a death, you know, a death to that.

And I've got a cold feet a lot since. Well, Kate and I just ordered the other day, couple days ago, some heated ski socks. Well well. It's gonna cost me $420. But it might just bring new life to my freezing feet.

So my point is that yes, it's gonna cost you something, but but, man, what are you gonna get?

That's great. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Oh my gosh.

I can't wait. Yeah. Yeah. That's great. Okay.

I I talked about death death death death death death for a moment. But what is Jesus all about? Life. Life and resurrection. Thank you, John.

Resurrection is literally the core tenant of following Jesus. Jesus gets word that his best buddy Lazarus is sick. And and then they say, well, we should we should go to him. And then Jesus says, well, no. He's sleeping.

Meaning that he had already passed away and his disciples were like, no. If he's sleeping, we should just let him rest. And then Jesus is like, he gone. He dead. But don't worry.

This sickness will not end in death. There is nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing that we can bring to the foot of the cross and crucify that we will not experience resurrection abundant life on the other side. Thank you, John, for preaching that message. John chapter eight. We're going to read Jesus.

Look. We're gonna read read the words of Jesus and interaction that he has with a group of people. And here's what I want you to be looking forward for as you read. Number one, I want you to be looking for the new wine that could be poured out over the course of this interaction, and I want you to look for examples of people's wine skin. Okay?

That's what you're looking for as we read. Say it one more time. Look for examples of new wine that Jesus pours out and look at people's capacity or ability to contain the new wine that Jesus pours out. Why don't I read this and you follow along and listen. John chapter eight.

I'm gonna start reading in verse 31. Jesus said to the people who believed in him, you are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teaching. And you will know the truth, and the truth will, what? Set you free. But we're descendants of Abraham, they said.

We've never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean you'll be set free? Jesus replied, I tell you the truth. Everyone who sins is a slave of sin. A slave is not a permanent member of the family, but a son is a part of the family forever.

So if the son sets you free, you're truly free. Yes. I realize that you are descendants of Abraham, and yet some of you are trying to kill me because there's no room in your hearts for my message. I'm telling you what I saw when I was with the father, but you are following the advice of your father. Our father is Abraham, they declared.

No, Jesus replied. For if you really were the children of Abraham, you would follow his example. Instead, you're trying to kill me because I told you the truth, which I

heard from

God. Abraham never did such a thing. Nope. You are imitating your real father. They replied, we aren't illegitimate children.

God himself is our true father. Jesus told them, if God were your father, you would love me because I have come to you from God. I am not here on my own, but he sent me. Why can't you understand what I'm saying? It's because you can't even hear He is really getting into it with the people gathered there.

Let's identify who the character are, who the characters are in this interaction. And that's gonna help us to unpack what all is happening. So the first question, who who is one of the characters? You get a really easy answer with a low hanging fruit. Who's one of the characters in this interaction?

That's right. Who else? The Jews. Jews.

Mine says the Jews who had believed in

him. Yeah.

Thank you for adding that description. See it again. The Jews had him. Believed Now who would you think would obviously, Jesus. Who would you think based upon the words that are being said?

Who would you think who typifies this kind of interaction with Jesus? The Pharisees. The Pharisees. Right. It's not the Pharisees.

Who is it? The Jews who believed in Jews who believed in it. It

is important to say that because as you're reading it, you're like, wait. Haven't I heard this exact speech to the Pharisees? Right?

It is important. Oh, okay. It is important. Now we'll we'll talk about that nuance. Verse 31 says, Jesus said to the people who believed in him.

So I'm gonna I'm gonna put Jay on the spot here just because he happened to make eye contact with me as I was thinking of this question. Tough question. Jesus said to the people who believed in him, were those people saved?

Not necessarily. Excellent

diplomatic answer. Not necessarily. Go ahead and tell me more. Defend your answer. What do you tell me more about not necessarily.

Like it says, faith without faith without works is dead. And

Who said that? James. James? James. But it's in it's in scripture.

So it is said yeah. Yeah. Jesus did not say that, but I I don't think you intended to say that. But it is said faith without works is dead. I'm following you.

So I feel like that's kinda like one of the claims he's making. And he's like, oh, like, if you, like, truly believed in me, like, you wouldn't be hearers of the word only, but you'd be doers of the word. Corinthians, it talks about, like, if you, like, pray in tongues but don't have love, then, like, then you have nothing. Like, I don't know. I feel like I'm taking a shotgun approach to tell you that, like I mean, he's the judge.

It's hard it's hard to tell if someone's saved or not.

Yes. Yes. Yeah. Ultimately, he's the judge. Yes.

And I do like how when I ask you, hey, tell me more about your answer, defend your answer. What I like is about what you said is there are verses that started to come bubbling up to the surface to help kind of build your case. Yes. That is evidence of a person that has spent time in God's word, allowing it to penetrate his heart so that at the right time, at the right season, it could come bubbling up like it.

I think looking at it, continuing with that too, Jesus', like, first statements aren't combative.

They aren't.

It's like speaking truth. And then his the people that are the Jews who believe are like, ah, well, actually, you know, like, we've never been slaves to anyone. They're just like all there's so much pride for so many Jews as for being descendants of Abraham. And I think the rest of this can be viewed as Jesus calling them out and being like, no. Actually, that's that's not right.

Like, you have no like, so much of, like, what Paul talks about, like, what Jay was saying is, like, him breaking down what the Jews think about themselves. Right? And being like, you have no status, extra status in this kingdom over somebody else. Like, the whole any of his converse like, Paul's writings about, like, well, is it, like do you mean more because you're circumcised over, like, a Gentile who's not? And you go.

And so Jesus already starting to sow those seeds. And I think it fits with his character too because so much of the gospel that Jesus preached was not about getting numbers. I mean, there's literal passages where he talks people out of it.

Yes. I love it. And then he turns to the crowds to his disciples, say, how how about you? You're free to go too. I I like it.

Ella, did you have your hand up? Yeah. Okay. Put you

in there. I could have read this a little bit differently.

Alright. Okay.

Great. I read it more I agree that, like, Jesus isn't coming at them, like, combatively, but I think it's more of a, like, the Jews are wondering if they're actually saved. It's like I feel like it's more of Jesus coming from, like, a heart of, like, no. Like, whoever commits a sin is a slave to sin, but, like, I and my father free you. And so I feel like it comes from more of a, like, no.

I'm, like, confirming that, like, you are saved Oh. Because my father, like, watches away sin as soon as you, like, ask to be saved. So I think that's kind of where I read it as, not necessarily a, like, Jesus on his pedestal being, like, actually, no. Mhmm. But, like, coming from, like, love of, like, no.

Like, this is what I'm trying to tell you, and you're

just not getting it

yet. Yes.

I'm just trying to tell you that, like, if the god is your father and you have confessed your sins, then you are saved.

I like that. That will that will also preach well. Mhmm. Now as we get into our conversation a little deeper, we're gonna we're gonna widen the aperture and look at the context a little bit greater, and it could add a little more color to that. But considering what we just read, I I like it, Ella.

Janet, were you gonna

say something? Well, I I was going to say, I think he's telling them that they're stuck in tradition. They're following the advice of their father, and they're stuck in that. You know, we're descendants of Abraham, and that's enough.

Yes. And

Jesus says, there's you're trying to kill me, and there's no room in your heart for my message. Yes. So it's really you're following tradition in the old the old wine, but you're not making food in your hearts for me. Oh.

Yes. So I'm going back to the wineskins.

Yep. Yep. The two things I had you read looking for.

It's almost like my teachings are the new one. You guys are stuck in the old wine skins, and you can't make it work.

Yes. You're bursting. Yes. Yes. Bullseye.

A plus. Three stars on the chart. Yes. You're you're you're seeing it. You're you're exactly seeing it.

Jesus said to the people who believed in him. So back to the question that I fired at Jay earlier. Here's what here's what's unfolding. People believed in the message of Jesus unto salvation. You're the Christ.

You're the Messiah. You're the one that's been expected of you. You're the savior of of Israel and have come to save human hearts. So were they technically saved? I would make a strong argument that they were.

The bible literally says they believed in him. But there were still a lot of I like to think of it as weeds in the garden. So when you plant a garden, which I've never done, just to be honest, you get the stuff that grows up out of the garden that you want, that you planted. But then if you're not constantly tending the garden, just all kinds of other things grow up too. And so in this moment, there are some seeds that have been planted in the fertile soil of the hearts of these Jews that have taken root and blossomed up.

But what Bob is pointing out is Jesus is confronting the weeds that also have been growing up in their garden. This should be very encouraging to us that even though we believe in Jesus for salvation and he is the leader of our life, that there are still areas of our life that need some weed pulling and some course correcting. And that's what Jesus is doing here. And what I want us to zoom in on that Bob began to point out to us is the new wine of what Jesus was saying. You're exactly right.

But then let's take a close look at the wineskin in which the Jews who believed in Jesus were trying to fit the new wine of Jesus' words. Are you with me? Mhmm. Okay. So let's go back to skim this.

Put your little nose in your bible and look for places that the people respond to give us an indication of the condition of their wineskin? What do you see?

I think to the point of it bursting, like, every time they speak, both in what we read, but then continuing through the chapter, it is continuously more like at first, it's the, oh, well, like, what do you mean we've been set free? And then they're, our father is Abraham, we've declared. Then it goes up, and they're like, we're not illegitimate children. Yes. And then the next thing they say is you are a Samaritan devil.

We say it all along that you were possessed by a demon.

Yeah. And then it

goes even further to the end of the chapter where they, like, try to stone him.

Yes. I know. Yes. Yes.

Candle and riling them up.

Yes. Yes. And and Bob said the word a moment ago. Splitting. This is what we're talking about today.

There are so many people that in in this city that have come to Jackson to be a ninety day wonder, and you might be at the very beginning of your ninety days of wonder being a seasonal worker here. Or you might be on your third year or thirtieth year being a ninety day wonder. Oh my god. I'm so But so many so many seasonal young adults, so many people come to Jackson for a season, and they have come from some type of Christian background or faith. You know?

Their parents drug them to church. Oh, I went to church all through school. And in high school, you went to youth group because, you know, your youth group was really cool. They had, like, benches and, like, a taco bar and like laser tag every week. I don't know.

And you just kind of grew up with that culture. Then you go to college and maybe you're involved in some sort of a type of like, you kinda checked in with campus ministry, but you knew just enough that you could be like warm, you know, around Christian people and cold enough that around your friends in college that didn't know and love and honor the Lord, you could fit in with him as well. And then now here you are in Jackson Hole, you saw some Instagram post or something and you're like, oh, that looks like really cool to come to. And you have been in this city for some amount of time. The new Babylon of of the American Intermountain West, the most godless city that you could ever find yourself in.

And you're in a spiritual wasteland here, and the city around you promises fresh, refreshing water. Just ski more. Just have newer gear. Just do bigger lines in the park or on the pass. Just ski faster.

Just get more days on your pass. Just just just just just just and and that's gonna fill you up. And it's like it's like the promise of seawater promise of fresh water, but you just gulp in seawater.

And

then you find yourself at tribe or at maybe whatever church you call home and there's new wine that's being poured out. But instead of abandoning the old wine skin, you're like, well, maybe I'll just add Jesus to my mountain lifestyle. And you will, in Bob's words as a prophet, split. This is what Jesus is saying. This is the warning about the new wine.

Let me just point out a couple things, and then we'll we'll make some room in our service for the Holy Spirit to speak to us. So the new wine that Jesus is pouring out has to do with his identity. He came as a savior, but not this time as a nationalistic, national hero type of guy. He came to set people free from from the oppressive regime of sin and death. Not the occupying Romans.

He was like, Roman, just give it a couple hundred years. Ain't nothing. So Jesus came to pour out the new wine about his identity. If the son, that's who Jesus is, he says, on the son sets you free, then you're truly free. He also poured out new wine about their condition.

We've touched on that. Verse 33. They said, but we're the descendants of Abraham, they said. We've never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean you may be set free?

Is that statement historically accurate? No. No. Who who are they slaves to? Egypt.

Egypt. Egypt. Babylon. Assyria. Now essentially under Romans.

What were they talking about? We've never been slaves to anyone. Literally, that's in, like, your history. You celebrated every year. I know.

I just I agree. So Jesus was pouring out new wine about their true condition. And then he says this. This is this is you have to you have to see what spiritual eyes in the text. But here's what Jesus is saying.

The new one that he's saying is if you don't change, my image will change in your heart. You either can conform your life to my image or yours your heart will conform me into your image. That's permissive. Mhmm. That turns a blind eye, that allows you to continue living and thinking and acting the way that you want to with a perception of Jesus' approval over them.

So let me be super clear and and I have this I'll put this up on the screen. Here's the warning about the new wine. If you try to put new wine into old wineskins, the old wineskins will split hey. You used that word, Bob. Will split apart.

You will lose the old wineskin and the new wine. Let me say it a little bit differently to to try to allow this to penetrate deeper into your heart to transform your life. If you hold so tightly to old ways that there is no room in your heart for a new move of God in your life, you are in jeopardy of even losing the sweetness of what he did in the past.

So new stuff turns old. Right? Just all the time. How so I'm just thinking, like, if we have these new wineskins and we're surrendered and everything, how do we keep them from getting old, you know, if we're continuing to put new wine in? And then I have the thought of how, like, a cast iron skillet is a special dish.

You're not supposed to wash it like you do others. You you shouldn't. You'll get rusty. And so what you do is you keep what's in there. You wipe it out, and then you condition it with new oil.

And here at Tribe, always say, buy oil. Buy oil. Cultivate a relationship with the holy spirit. You know, how do you do that? You spend time in his word and pray.

You are you know, like, the things are are Christian ways. So as you oil, just like you keep a skillet, that's a vessel that needs to be it's a separate dish, and it needs to be oiled and kept different. So we buy oil is the term that we use which is spending time with the Lord to keep our one skin new and prepared as a vessel that will continue by your definition earlier that will receive the new wine and continue to stay new and fresh and pliable so we can receive and see what the holy spirit is doing and how and recognize new wine and keep it in the right container.

Skillet. Cast iron skillet. Yeah. Yes. That's good.

Let's say that your wineskin has a mindset of God loves me based upon my performance. So that if I'm good, then God loves me. But if I'm bad, if I messed up, if I've blown it, then then he doesn't love me. He's displeased with me, and and he doesn't talk to me. Then you come to church and and or you read in your bible that God loves you not because of who you are or what you've done, but because of who he is.

And you encounter the new wine of his great love for you, but you try to fit that into the old wineskin of performance based mentality. Can you see how that potentially is a recipe for disaster? That you want to believe that God loves you and he is for you and his son has paid for your sins on the cross. All of that new wine, but it's fitting into the wineskin of of your experiential reality of I've messed up. I've blown it.

I failed. I feel, fill in the blank, they're incongruent with one another. And let's say that you've messed up and you've blown it. The enemy loves to heap condemnation on top of you. And then you come to church and you feel as though either the preacher or or your own dialogue in your head is just like, man, this guy's really like picking on you today and picking on picking on me today and I don't like this.

I don't really have to that's it. I'm out of here. I'm not I'm never coming back. I mean, pull out the list of people's names that we've written down who had no. Just kidding.

If only you knew. And I'm sure that you have a list too of people like, oh, yeah. Remember them? They were they were running hard after God. And then and then, like, I don't even know what happened to them.

And then now I haven't even off they go. It's the new wine of encountering god trying to be poured into the old wineskin of their old way of life. It splits the wineskin apart. The the the wineskin is lost and the new wine cannot be contained. If you yeah.

Yeah. If you hold tightly if you try to if you hold so tightly to the old way that there is no room in your heart for a new move of God in your life. You are in jeopardy of even losing the sweetness of what he did in the past. Mhmm.

Can you clarify definitions of old and new? So, like, in your last example,

the old

guy was thinking that god's love was based on our works, which is has always been

false. Yes.

So our old ways things that have always been wrong or old ways things that were right for the season? Like, what are you saying between old and new?

Are you able to hear that question? Mhmm. A little bit. Distinguish help us to distinguish between old and new. Is old wrong, and then it gets replaced with the new line of correct?

Or is the old something that worked and was acceptable in the past and is now being replaced with better. Right. Okay. So Joy asked, can you help us to distinguish? Is it this or this?

What's my answer? Yes. The answer is yes. It can be old and and uncorrect. And that would be a stretch of our analogy a little bit.

But here's a here's a really unspiritual example. When does church have to be? Sunday at nine and eleven. No exception. Yes.

Sunday at nine and eleven. No exception. That's when church is. Please show me that in the bible. Church has to have like oh, how about this one?

Church has to have a cross somewhere in the building. And the church has to be mean, look look at look at the new wineskin of this. And, I mean, your wineskins are pretty dang stretchy. If you can if you can come here for for church and to meet with saints and to to fulfill the scriptural definition of church. But the Lord in these days is challenging and stretching what we have held on to that has been, it could be good and valuable and appropriate for that season.

But the Lord is saying we're moving into a new season and I'm going to I have been pouring out new wine in this new season and your old wineskin cannot contain it. Just one example would be preparing our hearts for the return of Jesus. Now there have always been since Jesus ascended in the clouds a small remnant and company of people that have burned with the prayerful expectation of the soon return of Jesus. So far, he's been about two thousand years in company. But I believe that as it's happened in my heart, it's happening in tribe's heart, that the Lord is pouring out this new wine of growing an expectation for his soon imminent return.

And the wineskin of well, I guess we'll just wait and see. No man knows the day or the hour. And when I die, this is the wineskin I have. No man knows the day or the hour. And when I die, I go to heaven.

I I float on a cloud. I get a harp. I just get to be in this ethereal place with God forever, but it's okay because I'll just be worshiping him. That was that was my wineskin. And I couldn't contain anything else even though it was here all along.

But then Jesus begins to pour out new wine. And I'm like, wait. Woah. Woah. Woah.

Wait a minute. And I had to abandon the old wine. I had to die to that. Well, we'll just wait and see that that had to die. And I had to purchase a new wineskin of his soon imminent return and and orienting my life and the life of the church around that key principle.

So it was we'll find out someday was that wrong? No. It wasn't wrong. But it was incompatible with the new one that he was pouring out. So my question to you today as we land the plane is this.

He has already spoken to you about an area of your little life, of your little heart, that he is wanting to pour out new wine. And I know that you know this because I am absolutely supremely confident in his ability to effectively whisper to your heart so that it confronts you. Just like he's confronting these people. Then Jesus went and stepped on the toes of those that already believed him. That's how this might as well be.

The question is, will you abandon your old wineskin mindset, a mentality, a rut, maybe maybe your theology on something? Or will you hold on tightly to that old wineskin? But this is what my denomination always taught. I wrote this at the end of my notes. I just said bonus.

One, two, three, four, five, six things. It's not in the notes, but it's it's it's the it is a a sobering dire warning about what will happen in your life and in your heart if you refuse to buy, to purchase a new wine skin. And I won't have a clean conscience unless I share with you from what God's word says about this. If we look at the text that we just read, all the way and you can go back and read it all the way up through verse 47. Look at how the people respond to the new wine that Jesus is pouring out when they refuse to get a new wine.

And you you touched on this, Connor. They they there was no room in their hearts for the message. Right? We've never been a slave to any like, what are you talking about? So for anyone who is considering holding on to their old wineskin, this is what's in store for you.

Verse and these are rapid fire, and they're not on the screen. Verse 37, room in your heart for Jesus begins to contract and shrink Jesus says there's no room in your heart for my message number two verse 41 it says that you begin to imitate the enemy which means that falsehood enters your life that you may say one thing but you really live another way verse 43 your understanding grows darker to the point where you can't even hear his voice. Verse 44, Jesus says that you begin to love evil. Verse 45 says, you don't believe or trust in Jesus any longer. The the the person of Jesus, but an idol begins to be constructed in your heart.

Then that's what you pay allegiance to. In verse 47, it says, you don't listen and you don't belong. That's the warning of the new wine. When Jesus pours out new wine and you refuse to get a new wine skin, I'll read these six really quickly again. Verse 37 says, there's no room in your heart for my message.

Verse 41, you begin to imitate the enemy. Number three, verse 43, you you you lose understanding and you can't even hear his voice. Number four from verse 44, you begin to love evil. You make excuses for your lifestyle. Verse 45 says, you lose your trust and you don't believe in Jesus.

And then number six from verse 47, when you don't listen, you lose your belonging in your identity in Jesus. Yes. Death is required to purchase a new wineskin. But as John mentioned earlier, the new wine that he pours out that if we will submit and conform brings abundant life. I believe with all of my heart that in in these days, the tap is just beginning to open for a new wine that Jesus is pouring out on his church universal and triumphant around the world.

And unfortunately, many people within the church, and I would suggest to you even entire churches and denominations will hold so tightly to their old wineskin that they will suffer great loss. Far be it from from from us and from this community of believers. Lord, this is not I don't say these things to be exclusive or prideful or arrogant like we've got it and nobody else does. That is not my heart. That is not what I'm saying.

Heart comes before you in humility. Oh, I don't wanna let go of old wineskins. It's comfortable it's familiar it's what I've always thought and maybe even as Joy pointed out for a season it was super effective in some things but Lord I want a new wine. Like Amanda said earlier, I'd have to wipe out the skillet, wipe out anything in me that is incongruent. It doesn't fit in is not in alignment with the new wine of what you're doing.

This world is changing. This world is changing. We need new wine for a new world that we're living in. Give us the courage to pay the price for a new wine skin. Skin.

Now let the holy spirit just speak to you, and you know that it's the lord when he's he's not talking about big broad brushstrokes, but he's just very specific

just feel really strongly just with our eyes closed that that I've been in this place where the lord is where the holy spirit is bringing something up, but you're not really sure where that fits in his word or why the why. Why why Lord would you call me to surrender that? Or crucify that? Why? But you know he's telling you to do it and you're waiting to be obedient because you want to know the why.

And I have found that it's just taking that step of obedience and just complete surrender to the lord that actually breaks off that bondage. It's the obedience without knowing. Well, how is that going to change my life? How is that? So, there's something that's bubbling up and you're trying to like maybe rationalize or justify.

Yeah. But, lord, why would you call me? He he knows. He knows. He knows.

Here's how it might look and then we're gonna worship the lord one more way before we get out of here this morning. You may be going along through life. Do do do do. You know, what your life is normal life. And he taps you on the shoulder.

Beep. Beep. Beep. Yes, sir. And something that you've been doing or thinking or or something, it will, he'll get your attention and you'll just have this impression.

That just kind of feels like, and we say it on our staff team, that feels old wine skinny. It's kind of old wine skinny. Like, yeah. Might have been super effective, worked great, but now it's a different season. And so he'll just say, baby girl, that's just kinda old wine skin.

And then your flesh will be like, yeah, but, yeah, but, but, but that right there is the invitation to conform your life to him, to surrender to die. I want the new wine of what you have for me. But we always do Christmas Eve service on the town square. I mean, we are this year, but who knows what we'll do next year. Lord, let us hear your voice when you show us something that's old wine and skinny.

As we continue this attitude of worship, I want us to just be thinking about what Amanda said of continuing to buy oil, continuing to assess the condition of our wine skins. Because like Brian said, we have things that work for a time. And so it's not that that's wrong, but if we're continually assessing if we need new wineskins for the new wine, God is pouring out, that we're ready when he does pour it out. Fire, dad's approved. Father God, just as we need to be assessing ourselves for new wineskins, God, move in our hearts and continue to help us assess what you would have us give of our time and our talent and our treasure.

Let this not be something that is just automatic and always just, alright, 10%. Like, that's just the automatic that comes out of my account every week, But that our hearts be postured to give you everything, God, to be asking you constantly, what do you want me to give? How much? In what ways? So that we are always ready to be your hands and your feet, god.

And so just like we were talking about with the tithe and the offering, if you want to give of your time, cooking a meal is a great way.

And the bar is pretty low because you don't have to cook. You can just pick up Domino's. Like, it's not something where you have to make some huge meal. But if you wanna serve, it is a great, tangible, easy way to serve that has such immense impact as we have so many new young adults coming in. Thanks.
