This service, held at the TMC, stepped away from the New Wine series for one week. Brian shared a dream he had the night before, then led the congregation through two scripture passages and an open discussion before closing with a time of anointing. The through-line connecting all of it was the idea of consecration and what it means to carry that into ordinary life.
What was said
Brian opened by asking the group to read Exodus 30:22-33 together, the passage describing the sacred anointing oil God gave Moses. He paused on one detail in particular: normally, something consecrated becomes ordinary when it touches something common. In this recipe, the reverse is true. Whatever touches the anointed object becomes holy. He let that sit before moving on.
From there the group turned to all of Isaiah 32. Before reading, Brian gave some basic orientation: Isaiah was a prophet calling Israel back to God, warning of coming judgment that could be avoided if the people listened. He asked everyone to put on what he called their prophecy glasses and read the chapter looking for one question: has this been fulfilled, is it being fulfilled, or is there still a future fulfillment ahead?
The conversation that followed was wide open. Verse one, "a righteous king is coming," pointed clearly to Jesus. Brian noted that wherever the word "king" or "princes" or "rulers" appears in books like Isaiah or Proverbs, it is worth substituting the word "leaders," because all of us are leaders over at least one person: ourselves. The group connected the rulers in verse one to the language in Revelation 5:9-10, where those purchased by Christ's blood are made "a kingdom and priests" who will reign on the earth.
Verse 15 drew the most discussion. "Until at last the Spirit is poured out on us from heaven" was read as having at least three layers of fulfillment: already accomplished at Pentecost, still unfolding in the present life of the church, and pointing forward to the millennial reign of Christ. Brian described that final fulfillment in vivid terms, the return of Jesus, the saints caught up to meet him, comparing it to a fiance running down a jetway toward a soldier coming home.
Brian then stitched the two passages together. The anointing oil in Exodus and the outpouring of the Spirit in Isaiah share the same theme: consecration. The Spirit is what consecrates believers. Whatever the Spirit touches becomes holy. The group made that connection themselves before Brian named it.
Then Brian shared the dream. He was standing on top of a hill made of twisted rebar, broken concrete, tank treads and shattered glass. He knew people were buried in it. He had a flask of thick, honey-like oil, and as he poured it out over the chaos, the hill dissolved and the people inside were revived. When he woke up he asked whether it was from God, and felt prompted to bring oil to the service and anoint the hands of anyone who wanted to receive it.
Brian moved around the room and anointed hands while Lissa spoke over the congregation. She described a picture from the Chronicles of Narnia of kings asleep at a table, covered in vines, still wearing their royal garments but unable to move. The word she kept hearing was "untangle." The anointing, she said, was not about changing anyone's identity, because that had not changed. It was about untangling the hurt, hardship and trauma that had slowed people down and covered over who they already are.

- When you wake up from a dream that feels significant, pause and ask the Holy Spirit whether it was from him, then write down what stands out before it fades.
- Pick one area of your life where things feel tangled or stuck and pray specifically, asking the Lord to pour his anointing into that exact crack or crevice.
- Read a passage from Isaiah this week with your prophecy glasses on, asking yourself whether what you are reading has been fulfilled, is being fulfilled, or still waits for a future fulfillment.
- If you read a proverb about a king or ruler today, swap that word for leader and read the verse again with yourself in mind, including the responsibility that comes with that identity.

And today, what I thought we would do is we're gonna we're gonna switch it up just a little bit. We've been talking about this idea of new wine, and we've been defining terms, new wine, new wineskin, what those terms mean, how they relate and apply to our lives, what does Jesus have for us when he uses that term.

And we're going to continue that series next week. But today, we're gonna take a little bit of a departure. We're gonna read two passages, and then I'd like to share with you a dream that I had last night. And and then we will we'll unpack those things together. How does that sound?

So if you have your bible with you this morning, would you please turn to the book of Exodus? That's the first place we're gonna start. And I love to preload you with a question. Right? So here's what I want you to be looking for as we read two different passages.

What I want you to be looking for is what is the common theme or element that ties these two passages together. So the first passage is in Exodus chapter 30. And would somebody please read verse 22 through 33. And we don't have a mic in the room, but it's okay.

Pause right there. That's worth underlining. Mhmm. Mhmm. Under normal circumstances, anything that has been consecrated, we'll talk about that word in a moment, anything that is consecrated that touches something ordinary, the thing that's consecrated then becomes ordinary.

And the reason why we're going to read all of Isaiah 32 is so that we don't just take a few verses out of context. But whenever possible, I always like to take when it comes to, like like, how much to bite off and chew for us, I like to take a generous amount of the minimum requirement. Does that make sense? Just so that we don't, like, read one verse and then launch off of there well, without having without at least talking about the context because that's how you can, like, get off into the ditch, you know, pretty quick by just, like, pulling out little verses. And so I like to I like for all of us to have equal opportunity to get the the big scope of what's going on.

Okay? So Isaiah 32. We're gonna read all of Isaiah 32. And to give you a little bit of background of what's happening in Isaiah, Isaiah was a prophet for the nation of Israel, and he spoke on behalf of God to warn the people of God to return back to him that they were under close threat of coming under the chastisement of the Lord, getting a spanking, and that spanking would come in the form of losing their nation and getting a time out, so to speak, in captivity. Now in Isaiah's time, the chastisement was postponed because just enough of the people of Israel listened that devastation and catastrophe did not befall them.

But a hundred years later in Jeremiah's day, it was a completely different story. But here's if you're not familiar with the book of Isaiah, here's here's the main thing that you need to know. He was a prophet of God. He spoke on behalf of the Lord to the nation of Israel and exhorted them, extolled them, cajoled them, warned them, provoked them, returned to the Lord, returned to the Lord. So that's that's what you need to know, and that'll give you some frame of reference for what we're going to read in Isaiah 32.

I'm not gonna put on necessarily, although I keep them close by historical narrative because there is a lot that Isaiah says that is recounting facts of the day and things like that. All of these things are helping us to if you if you read chapter 32 and you're like, I have no clue what Isaiah is talking about. When you know these things, it can begin to help chip away at this this this massive mountain of what am I reading? Because here's the tendency. Most people without understanding will be like, well, I gotta read Isaiah today. They read that, and they don't know where to put it or what to do with it, and therefore it has very little relevance to their life.

But when you know who the author is, what his job was, who he was writing to, the rough time period of when he was writing, the genre of what he's writing, and then not only the genre of what he's writing, but what that genre means. And so we are all in this position of being a leader serving under our righteous king who has come and who has given our spirit out for us. And then in two, says, each one, talking about the leaders, will be like a shelter from the wind and a refuge from the storm, like streams of water in the desert and a shadow of a great rock in a parched land.

So here's a dream that I had. I frequently have dreams, and sometimes they're like pizza dreams, you know, something you ate, you know, the night before. Sometimes I have rehearsal dreams where something that I'm chewing on or trying to figure out or solve, I'll go over and over and over it in my sleep. And then sometimes I have a good idea. Sometimes I wake up, like, tired.

You know, every everybody has those kind of dreams. Right? Where you're trying to, like, fix a problem or or wrestle through something. Sometimes I have god dreams. And when I wake up and I recall the dream because many times I don't necessarily remember my dreams.

But if I think there was something interesting, I'll just say, Lord, was that of you? And then I'll just it'll have a a little hint of the fragrance of heaven on it, and then I start to unpack it from there. If I wake up from a dream and I have the guitar playing in my dream, I have the guitar playing skills of prince, but the legs of an ostrich and I'm, you know, the the prince of Poland. I'm like, okay. Maybe that was a pizza dream.

Right? But this dream that I had last night, I was I found myself standing on top of not a pile, not a mountain as big as the Tetons, but like a hill. Like, I don't know, figuratively speaking, like like, I don't know, tall as High School Butte. You know? It was bigger than a pile, not as big as a mountain, so it was a big, a large hill.

And the hill was made up of twisted rebar and broken concrete and a a chaos there where I remember vividly seeing tank treads that were, you know, broken and and mixed in there, twisted steel and broken glass, and calamity and chaos, and I stood as I stood on top of this. I didn't see any people, but I knew that there were people in that in that hill. And then in my dream, I don't remember if the Lord gave it to me or if I had it, but I remember pouring out a a substance from a flask that was thick and had the consistency of honey out of this flask. And as I looked around at all of the the the the chaos and brokenness and and dysfunction and calamity, I don't remember feeling necessarily any emotionally, like broken or outraged or anything. I was just like, well, let's just fix it.

And then I had a flask in my hand, and I knew that this flask was special. It was of the Lord. And so I began to pour this stuff out, and and it came on really slow. And it was like kind of like like Winnie the Pooh cartoon honey. You know, it was like, you know, like, it was like real thick because they were, like, poured out.

And it poured out over the hill and got down into all of the nooks and crannies and crevices. And as more of this anointing oil began to pour out, the mountain dissolved, and I felt myself, like, going in lower. And the only thing that was left were the people that were caught up in the the twisted chaos and destruction. And they were drinking in the the thick substance and being revived. And that was my dream.

now when it comes to interpretation, if it's a god dream, it he's sharing that with you for a reason. Okay? And there are times when I have god dreams where I'm not quite sure about the interpretation, and and it's okay to consult people that you trust. You should first consult the the Holy Spirit and ask him, like, what was that about? Right.

Mhmm. But as he's unfolding it for you, it's okay to consult with others that you trust. And don't just consult one other person that you trust because they'll say one thing and be like, oh, well, the the viscosity of the oil represents none. The tank treads and the twisted represents none and you're like, interesting. Just wait and consider.

Then talk to somebody else, and they're like, oh, what stands out to me is the people and how it all dissolves, and then they'll they'll have a different just just consider it. Ultimately, you should trust the interpretation of the Holy Spirit for you. And part of this dream, I'm still to to be honest with you, I'm still unfolding and unraveling. But the part that when I woke up, there was a a tactile portion to the dream that the Lord gave me an assignment for that we're gonna do here in just a moment as we pretty soon. In a few moments, we'll we'll transition to the next part of the service.

But when I woke up, I said, Lord, was that a god dream? And then he just showed me a picture of me here doing something that we're about to do. I brought some oil with me. Now this is not this is this is not the recipe in Exodus that that we read about, but symbolically, it will it will accomplish what we're looking to accomplish. And in my in my mind's eye, I saw a picture of me coming around and and anointing the hands of anybody that would receive this from the Lord.

And then during our discussion, this is this is a cool moment for me. Then during our discussion, out of the text and your observations comes this idea of leadership and influences and being royalty, having certain rights and privileges, but also, as Greta said, responsibilities. And so I think what the Lord could be stitching together for us, and this is this is really cool, is that as we receive and step into our identity as royalty. It comes with rights and privileges, but also the responsibility to bring peace and order, healing, and wholeness to areas of chaos that we may find ourselves in the midst of. Whether that's through a situation at work or maybe there's a a situation unfolding within your family or among your friend group, maybe as an intercessor to the nations.

I mean, if you I don't know if you've been checking the news, but the country of Georgia, which sits near the country of Turkey, is is essentially on on fire right now with with hundreds of thousands of people protesting around the country because the citizens of Georgia want to join the European Union becoming more western in their values and in in democracy. The country of Russia likes to keep them as a buffer country from the European Union and from NATO, and there's a lot of Russian interference in their government preventing their country of Georgia from becoming more democratic. The country of Syria has been invaded by these Islamic jihadist rebels that have already taken the second largest city in Syria and on their way south towards Damascus. All this has happened in the last thirty hours. So perhaps perhaps the anointing is for intercession for the nations.

But here's what here's what I saw in my mind's eye is we're going to go into a time of a ministry time, and we'll just close our eyes and and receive from the Lord. And I don't wanna make it mandatory, but optional. And in this ministry time, I will come around and I'll have some of this on my thumb, And I just wanna touch your the fingers of your left hand and then touch the fingers of your right hand with this to to anoint you and to affirm your identity as royalty and the authority that you have to influence your world and the world around you. And if for and I also saw this in my mind's eye. If for whatever reason you're not down for that, well, just don't hold your hands up.

During this time, I just had a picture of I can't remember which movie it is. It's one of the chronicles of Narnia, and the kings are all sitting around table, and they've had, like, vines and stuff grow all over them. And so they're, like, mostly asleep and covered with these vines. And so they still have, like, their, you know, king garments on and things like that. And it isn't until the kids come that there's something that they do that that allows those minds and stuff to break off and, like, kings to come back awake and take back their their kingdoms and go back into the into the position that they have been called to.

And I just felt like similar to Brian's dream, like this untangling with the anointing comes as untangling. Like, your identity as priests, as leaders, as rulers is is there. You're wearing your garments. But then as Brian anointed us, like, it untangles those vines maybe are, like, the hardships and the difficulties and the brokenness and the destruction that's in your life that has slowed you down

stopped you from being able to operate in that identity, and that this anointing is this time to untangle. That's the word I kept hearing was untangle. Untangle those those different things that are holding you back and slowing you down. Untangle you from that so that you can wake up again and operate in that leadership identity that he has called you to. And I really felt like he was saying, like, untangle the hurt and the the pain and the things that have happened in your life from your identity.

And so now is the time to untangle that so that you can operate in the fullness of that because your identity hasn't changed because of the hurt and the things that are going on in your life.
