What does Tribe teach about generosity?

At Tribe, the teaching on generosity starts with a direct claim Brian Hunter makes about Jesus: Brian says, "In the gospels, Jesus talks more about finances than he does about hell." That is not an accident. Jesus understood the connection between where money goes and where the heart actually lives, and Brian built the whole conversation around that connection. Giving, at Tribe, is not framed as a church fundraising mechanism. It is a spiritual discipline tied to love, trust, and surrender.

Brian drew three threads from scripture to show what that looks like in practice. The first is love. Using Luke 7, where Jesus tells the woman that her many sins are forgiven and so she has shown much love, Brian pressed on the flip side of that statement, that a person forgiven little loves little. The Pharisees in the room had constructed a false moral accounting system that told them they were basically fine, and it produced almost no love. The congregation worked through the idea that all of us owe the same debt that woman owed, and that the depth of love we show toward Jesus tracks directly with how honestly we reckon with how much we have been forgiven. Brian says, "Giving reflects our heart and is a practical way of expressing our love for Jesus." The second thread is trust. Brian returned to Matthew 6, where Jesus moves from treasure stored in heaven, through the familiar anti-worry verses, and lands on seeking the kingdom first. Those verses get printed on coffee mugs in isolation, but read together they all trace back to money. Giving trains the heart to trust Jesus with every part of life, not just in theory. The third thread came from John 6, the feeding of the five thousand. Five loaves and two fish in a boy's hands became twelve baskets of leftovers once he handed them over. The invitation Brian extended was simple: give Jesus something to work with.

The Shavuot messages also touched the edges of this. In Deuteronomy 16, Brian noted that God does not set a fixed percentage but asks for a voluntary, proportional offering, one that forces you to actually think through your blessings before you respond. He used the image of a child choosing which cookie to hand to mom when she asks for one. Every child knows the big one is the right answer. A good parent uses that moment to train generosity, Brian said, and God is doing exactly the same thing.
