What does Tribe teach about hearing god?

At Tribe, the teaching on hearing God starts with the conviction that every person who has placed their faith in Jesus has direct, unobstructed access to his voice. Guest preacher Jason, bringing a message inside Tribe's series on hearing God's voice, framed it this way: two lines are always available to us, one that leads to condemnation, shame, and fear, and one that leads to a Father who says we are loved, forgiven, and free. The enemy's line is the one most people pick up by habit, often without noticing. The heavenly one is always open, because Jesus lives permanently to intercede for those who come to God through him, and the Holy Spirit is doing the same.
Amanda Lack, teaching from 1 Samuel 3, drew a sharp line between hearing and listening. Samuel heard God's voice three times before he understood what was happening. Hearing is passive. Listening, Amanda said, is when the heart is actually attuned and the posture is aligned, something like Samuel's eventual response: 'Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.' She also pointed out that God kept calling rather than giving up, and that Eli's guidance was part of that process, a picture of community helping someone recognize a voice they have not yet learned to identify on their own. God did not give Samuel the message until Samuel's posture was right.
Brian Hunter has returned to this theme from several angles. In the clarity series, he argued that the path to hearing God more clearly is not waiting for a louder word but taking a step of obedience on what God has already said, because faith releases grace into a situation. In the series on walking in the Spirit, he laid out that the Holy Spirit speaks spirit to spirit, not through the five senses, and that learning to recognize that voice in small, mundane moments is what makes it unmistakable when something important comes. Jason put it plainly about the obstacle most people face: hurry. He quoted Walter Adams, who was the spiritual director of C.S. Lewis, saying that 'hurry is the death of prayer and only impedes and spoils our work. It never advances it.' The practical answer Tribe keeps coming back to is simple: stop, set aside time, get quiet, and let the spirit be the thing that listens.
