What does Tribe teach about building grit?

At Tribe, the teaching on grit starts with the feast of Sukkot itself. Pastor Brian walked the congregation through Deuteronomy 16:13, which places the celebration specifically after the grain has been threshed and the grapes have been pressed. That sequence is the whole point, he said. Brian says, "Before the party always comes the pressing." The feast was never meant to be comfortable. For seven days, Israelites left their homes and lived in temporary shelters made from branches, and that deliberate uncomfortability is what the rehearsal is for.
Pastor Brian defined grit as passion and perseverance toward a goal despite significant obstacles, and he pushed back against the idea that some people simply have it and others do not. Brian says, "Grit has less to do with talent and ability and more to do with relentless determination." He also said, "You weren't born with grit. Just as you gained strength by repeatedly lifting heavy objects, you gained grit by repeatedly confronting and overcoming challenges." Sukkot, in this reading, is a yearly training ground built into the calendar on purpose.
The teaching also carried a prophetic weight. Brian moved the congregation through passages in Zechariah, Ezekiel, Jeremiah, Revelation, and the gospels to show that Israel will one day be driven into the wilderness again, and that followers of Jesus need to be familiar enough with those prophecies to recognize what is unfolding when it happens. Zechariah 14 anchored the whole series, because it is the only feast Brian found in the Old Testament that the nations will still celebrate during Jesus' literal reign on earth, which he said is a sign of just how much this feast is meant to matter.
