What does Tribe teach about old habits?

At Tribe, the teaching on old habits starts with a specific cost: getting rid of them is not a matter of tidying up or setting them aside. Brian has taught through the new wine and wineskins series that old mindsets, old patterns, and old ways of thinking cannot simply be shelved. They have to be crucified. The flesh cannot be cast out, only put to death, and anything that is not crucified will keep coming back to the surface.
Brian points to John 8 to show what actually happens when someone refuses to let go. The people Jesus was speaking to were not obvious opponents. They were people who already believed in him, and yet their old wineskin, built on religious tradition and a pride in where they came from, had no room for what he was saying. Brian traced how that refusal escalated. What started as a defensive question ended with the crowd picking up stones. That is what an old wineskin does under pressure. It does not just resist. It breaks, and when it breaks, both the skin and the wine are lost. Brian put it plainly: "If you hold so tightly to old ways that there is no room in your heart for a new move of God in your life, you are in jeopardy of even losing the sweetness of what he did in the past."
The other side of that warning is what makes the teaching worth sitting with. Brian was clear that surrender is not loss without return. As he said in the series, "There is nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing that we can bring to the foot of the cross and crucify that we will not experience resurrection, abundant life on the other side." The death of an old habit or an old way of thinking is not the end of the story at Tribe. It is described as the very condition for new life.
