What does Tribe teach about religious legalism?

At Tribe, the teaching on religious legalism starts with two scenes from Matthew 12, Jesus' disciples picking grain on the Sabbath and Jesus healing a withered hand inside the Pharisees' own synagogue. Brian walked the congregation through both episodes not as history lessons but as a mirror. The Pharisees were not simply rule-keepers who got a few things wrong. Their whole system had hardened into a wineskin with no room left to stretch, and when Jesus showed up pouring something new, their only move was to demand he conform to the container rather than let the container be remade. The healing did not wait for a better moment or a safer location. Jesus walked straight into the trap and healed the man while he was still in the middle of answering his accusers.

The deeper point Brian pressed was that religious legalism and genuine transformation are not just different paths but are in direct tension. Brian says, "I really don't care how much you know about Jesus. But when I see evidence that you've spent time with Jesus resulting in a transformed life, that gets my attention." Knowledge of the rules, even sincere religious observance, is not the same thing as time spent with Jesus, and only the latter produces the kind of freedom that Matthew 12 is describing. The congregation also connected this pattern to Revelation 12, where the accuser attacks the brothers day and night. Brian named that same accusing spirit as the one still at work today, telling people who are beginning to walk in freedom that they have no right to it and pulling them back toward guilt and shame. He called that a lie directly.

The freedom Brian described will look, from the outside, like lawbreaking to anyone still living inside an old religious wineskin. That is the point of the title. The disciples were not violating the law; the Old Testament provision for gleaning by the poor covered exactly what they were doing. But the Pharisees could not see it because their system had no capacity left to receive it. Brian closed with the prayer that captures what Tribe is sitting with: "The rest of the world will say we're breaking the law, but we know that as we follow you, we're walking in freedom."
