What does Tribe teach about god's promises?

At Tribe, the teaching on God's promises starts with a distinction Brian returns to repeatedly: the promises of God are always guaranteed, but they are not automatic. That single idea runs through sermons going back to the beginning of 2023 and keeps resurfacing because it changes how a person actually lives. A promise from God is not a vending machine. It asks something of you. Brian uses Sarah and Abram as the clearest example: God gave Abram the ability to father a child, but had Abram not acted, the child of promise would not have come. The promise was certain; the participation was still required.
Brian draws on the Hebrew behind familiar phrases to show what that participation looks like. Putting your hope in God, he explains, carries the picture of braiding or twisting rope together, not passive wishing but an entwining of your life with his. Waiting on God means positioning yourself on an intercept course, the same readiness as crowds who arranged their lives to be on the shore when Jesus arrived. And when God honors that kind of waiting, he does it the way the floodwaters honored Noah's ark: by lifting you up and separating you from the corruption around you, not necessarily by rescuing you from the difficulty. Brian puts it plainly: "God said, today, I am giving you the land. Did he give them the land? Yes. But what did they have to do? Fight for it."
The other thread Brian keeps pulling is memory. He asks the congregation to think about every time they panicked over a situation God later resolved, because that record is worth holding onto. Joshua's farewell in Joshua 23 becomes the anchor for that: every promise God made came true and not one failed, and Joshua says that is something his people know deep in their hearts. Brian's point is that rehearsing what God has already done is not nostalgia. It is armor. As he opened one Thanksgiving service: "When we remember the victories God has given us in the past, it arms us with strength for today's battles."
